Pepe's Great Escape!

Today, while we were foraging for a new food supply for our Love Bird, Pepe, we spied some new environmental enhancements for his cage(er, living habitat). An attachable, edible, beak sharpening branch to enhance his hunting and pecking skills and a beautiful red ring the size of a large swing with a bell hanging from it to accompany his visions of swinging in a tree in the jungle! After fighting the strong currents of traffic on the asphalt river to arrive back at camp, I proceeded to “green up” Pepe’s habitat. Well, as soon as I brought one of these strange new objects in through the door, he was having none of this! With wings of steel, he squeezed through as space so small I couldn’t see it without my glasses and off he went into the wild blue(uh, wondrous air spaces) in our house! Sooo… armed with nothing but a couple of soft towels and a non threatening, wooden back scratcher, we set out on a find and capture expedition that should have aired on “Wild Kingdom”! Through sheer strength and maneuvering on our part, we began to wear down the resolve of our adversary! At one point, I had to hit the switch for the overhead fan with the swift dexterity of a gazelle to extricate the fowl winged beast from his perch without flinging him into the wall! After many attempts to cast our nets(ugh, towels) over our ungrateful friend, I guess he just valued his newly found freedom too much, he finally managed to fly into the side of a cliff(wall) and wedged himself between it and a large bookcase! After great thought about our dilemma, we decided to pull one end away from the wall, then I proceeded into the dark recess with my trusty little belt flash light and towel. Much to my chagrin, the little beggar pushed forward behind the next book case! So with great trepidation, I place the towel next to this opening with one hand, and with the other, proceeded to simulate the tremors of a minor quake to the other case! Low and behold, I saw a small red and green streak flash into the towel and voila, I had him! So I transported him to his home and gently extracted him into his own, familiar environment with the new additions and left him to himself to get used to them. I came back a little later hoping to catch him happily swinging on his new swing only to catch him soundly sleeping away, totally oblivious to his new toys! oh well, so much for the great jungle experience!

After Hours

Zippty doo da

Just a thought from Bill Craven: Wow! What a beautiful day! Life is good, my day off, wonderful weather, home with my beautiful wife! Man, I could sing zippity doo da all day long and praise God in the midst of such wonderful times. Please pray that I can remember to praise Him at all times, even in foul weather and everything seems to go wrong! Isn't it so much easier to do so when everything is "peaches & cream"?

Carol of the Bells - Computer Controlled Christmas Lights from Richard Holdman on Vimeo.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Walk In The Word With James MacDonald

The Real Light of Christmas

An open letter to those I love about the real hope of Christmas

One of the favorite traditions of the Christmas season is to illuminate the night with lights. Before we even turn the calendar to December, neighborhoods and businesses, homes and churches all burst in patterns of red, green, and white. Who doesn’t enjoy decorating the Christmas tree, then turning out all the other lights in the room to enjoy the twinkling lights? Even the flame of a single candle burns brightly against the backdrop of darkness.

This tradition is well suited to the real celebration of the season. The Bible says that when Jesus Christ was born, the light came into the world (John 3:19) In fact, more than 200 times throughout the Bible, God is described as light. Figuratively and literally, whenever God appears, light appears. It happened in the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, and all the way at the end of time when the book of Revelation tells us that in hell there will only be darkness and in heaven there will only be light.

When we celebrate Christmas, we remember the day in history when Jesus stepped from heaven to earth, bringing with Him the light that drives out the darkness in our hearts. This is amazing news! The person who wanted you to read this didn’t want you to be left in the dark about the greatest offer you could ever be given—the gift of life and light. The Bible says, “In [Christ] was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

You may be wondering, what does this have to do with me? Or, what does it mean to have the light of life? Those are the right questions to ask. There are many ways to describe the gift that God wants to give you, but let’s start here. Ask yourself, “What should I do with the light of the world?”

JESUS SAID, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. WHOEVER FOLLOWS ME WILL NOT WALK IN DARKNESS, BUT WILL HAVE THE LIGHT OF LIFE.” JOHN 8:12

The Light helps you find your way.

Have you ever been in some pitch-black place when you couldn’t even see your hand in front of your face? That’s what life is like without Jesus. Every person who turns to Jesus Christ sincerely by faith, He helps find their way out of the darkness. But you can’t fully appreciate the light until you feel the weight of the darkness.

* If you’ve ever felt lost, alone, and trapped—searching but not finding, Jesus Christ is the light.
* If you’ve ever felt cruelly crushed under the wrongs done in this fallen world, Jesus Christ is the light.
* If you’ve ever felt perplexed by an issue or circumstance that you can’t figure out, Jesus Christ is the light.

Maybe that describes you. If you understand what this means and desperately want to know the way out, you first have to admit that you’re in darkness. You don’t understand the purpose of life. Apart from Jesus Christ you’re not prepared to die, and apart from the forgiveness of your sin that can only be found in Him, you’re not prepared to live. Without Jesus we are all lost, alone, and in darkness— without hope because we’re without God. But it all can change right now.

Your friend who gave you this can attest to the fact that before they turned to Jesus, nothing made sense. They couldn’t sort out anything in this mixed up world. But since they received Jesus as their Savior, they understand what’s going on. Although life still isn’t perfect, they realize the destructiveness of sin and understand what God’s love and provision can and will do in their lives. Suddenly Christmas is so much more than a stale exchange of gifts and some silly guy in a red suit. At Christmas we celebrate Jesus Christ the light of the world and the forgiveness of sin that can only be found in Him.

The Light exposes your heart.

It doesn’t matter what you read in the paper, there’s no darkness so deep that it can not be overcome by light. Think back to that pitch-black place—now light a candle. Suddenly darkness is chased away. But it begins by facing the hard reality of who you are: a person in need of God’s grace.

* When you come to the light, all that is devious and sour in you is exposed.
* When you come to the light, everything that is dirty and shameful in you is exposed.
* When you come to the light, all that is dark and sinful in you is exposed.

The darkness of your heart can’t be denied anymore; it can’t be hidden or pushed away. But you can’t experience what the light of Jesus Christ offers you until you first let it expose who you really are.

We are all born with a sinful, dark heart. That doesn’t change until we first recognize how desperately we need God and how we have broken His law and are under His just condemnation (Romans 3:23). When you choose to come to Jesus, the light, the first thing that happens is that the light exposes your heart.

Many, many people tragically refuse to accept that truth about themselves. Jesus moves toward them to show them their heart and how much they need Him, but they push Him away.: No thanks, I’ll be fine—and they go back to their dark thinking. You have to let Him shine His light into all the darkness that is there if you want to receive all that He’s offered you.

But won’t I feel shame? Won’t I be condemned? More good questions. Let God answer them directly from His Word:

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. FOR GOD DID NOT SEND HIS SON INTO THE WORLD TO CONDEMN THE WORLD, BUT IN ORDER THAT THE WORLD MIGHT BE SAVED THROUGH HIM. WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED, BUT WHOEVER DOES NOT BELIEVE IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HAS NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY SON OF GOD. [19] AND THIS IS THE JUDGMENT: THE LIGHT HAS COME INTO THE WORLD, AND PEOPLE LOVED THE DARKNESS RATHER THAN THE LIGHT BECAUSE THEIR DEEDS WERE EVIL. FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES WICKED THINGS HATES THE LIGHT AND DOES NOT COME TO THE LIGHT, LEST HIS DEEDS SHOULD BE EXPOSED. BUT WHOEVER DOES WHAT IS TRUE COMES TO THE LIGHT, SO THAT IT MAY BE CLEARLY SEEN THAT HIS DEEDS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN GOD. JOHN 3:16-21

The Light dispels the darkness.

Now for the good news. When you expose your heart to the light and you see what you really need, the light of Jesus Christ chases away that darkness that is in your heart.

There is no darkness in any human being that the gospel can’t get to. You may have read this far thinking: Sure, this is all good news for some people, but you don’t know what I’ve done.
There’s no place where you have been where Jesus’ light can not go. There’s no sin that you have fallen into that the light can not overwhelm with grace. No sin is so dark that the light of Christ can not penetrate its depths.

What qualifies Jesus for this transaction? As God’s Son, He took on all your sin—and the sin of the world—when He died on the cross in your place. His blood covered the darkness of sin; He paid the complete price. He deserved none of it but He took all of it. The greatest injustice of all would be to continue to live in the darkness. Jesus suffered and died to set you free.

Sin offers only suffering, sadness, shame, and slavery. But Jesus, the light, brings hope, healing, forgiveness, life, and love. Your friend has found this to be true in their life, and they desperately want you to know about this gift from God. Your can receive it, too.

Here are the steps again: Find your way to Him. Let Him expose your heart. Let Him dispel the darkness in you. “SO JESUS SAID TO THEM, "THE LIGHT IS AMONG YOU FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER. WALK WHILE YOU HAVE THE LIGHT, LEST DARKNESS OVERTAKE YOU. THE ONE WHO WALKS IN THE DARKNESS DOES NOT KNOW WHERE HE IS GOING. [36] WHILE YOU HAVE THE
LIGHT, BELIEVE IN THE LIGHT, THAT YOU MAY BECOME SONS OF LIGHT.” John 12:35-36a

It’s your choice. Make today the day that you are saved from the darkness of sin. Don’t put it off. By faith, tell Him:

GOD—I SEE MYSELF FOR WHO I AM—A SINNER IN NEED OF GRACE. YOUR LIGHT HAS SHONE INTO MY LIFE AND EXPOSED MY HEART, PITCH-BLACK WITHOUT YOU. BUT I TURN TO YOU RIGHT NOW IN FAITH. I CHOOSE TO LEAVE THE DARKNESS BEHIND AND RECEIVE YOUR LIGHT OF LIFE AND ALL THAT THIS MEANS. MY LIFE WILL NEVER BE DOMINATED BY DARKNESS AGAIN BECAUSE I TRUST WHAT YOU’VE SAID IN YOUR WORD: IF I BELIEVE IN YOUR NAME, YOU WILL GIVE ME THE RIGHT TO BECOME YOUR CHILD. I BELIEVE THAT YOUR SON DIED IN MY PLACE ON THE CROSS AND TOOK MY PUNISHMENT FOR SIN. I RECEIVE HIS LIFE NOW IN EXCHANGE FOR MY REPENTANCE. IN CHRIST, I RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE. AMEN.

House Resolution Vote Ramadan Yea, Christmas Nay

clipped from www.townhall.com

Democrats who supported a House resolution to honor Ramadan voted against a similar resolution to honor Christmas and Christianity last night.

18 Democrats voted “nay” or “present” on a resolution to “recognize the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.” An eagle-eyed Republican House staffer points out that those same members, with one exception, voted to “recognize the commencement of Ramadan,” a Muslim religious observance in October.

Nine Democrats voted against the Christmas resolution. They are: Rep. Gary Ackerman (N.Y.), Rep. Yvette Clarke (N.Y.), Rep. Diane DeGette (Colo.), Rep. Alcee Hastings (Fla.), Rep. Barbara Lee (Calif.), Rep. Jim McDermott (Wash.), Rep. Robert Scott (Va.), Rep. Pete Stark (Calif.) and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (Calif.).
Another nine Democrats chose to vote "present." They are: Rep. John Conyers (Mich.), Rep. Barney Frank (Mass.), Rep. Rush Holt (N.J.), Rep. Donald Payne (N.J.), Rep. Allyson Schwartz (Pa.), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.), Rep. Peter Welch (Vt.) and Rep. John Yarmuth (Ky.).

Each of them supported the Ramadan resolution except for Rep. Lee, who did not vote.

The Weekly Walk from James MacDonald
I am Forgiven

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit … I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, “and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” Psalm 32:1,5

Can I remind you today of what God’s Word says about His forgiveness? I have prayed that as you read these Scriptures that the hope of God’s mercy will wash over your life. No matter what your relationship with God is like right now, you need His forgiveness. You need relief from the weight of guilt. You need to come to Him for the first or millionth time. Soak in what Scripture says about you and God, and what He would like to do, if you would choose:

The fact of God’s forgiveness.

Exodus 34:6, “The Lord [is] compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving kindness and truth, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin. Yet he will by no means clear the guilty.”

Psalm 86:5, “For you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive, abundant in loving kindness to all who call upon you.”

Micah 7:18, “Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, who does not retain His anger forever but delights in unchanging love.”

The extent of God’s forgiveness.

Psalm 103:12, “As far as the east is from the west, so far he has removed our transgressions from us.”

Micah 7:19, “He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.”

The blessing of forgiveness.

Ezekiel 36:25, “I’ll give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I’ll remove your heart of stone. I’ll put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you’ll be careful to observe my ordinances.”

Psalm 32:1, “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.”

When you think of the number of people on the broad road carrying their sin with them, and the few on the narrow road who find the forgiveness of their sins in God. How eternally blessed is the one whose sins are covered, who can say, I’m forgiven by God.

* Is there any sin that I need to confess to the Lord? Stop and take care of this right now.
* What confidence do I have that I will be forgiven?
* Pray any of the Scriptures above back to the Lord, and personalize with your name.

IS GOD REALLY TO BLAME?

When British rock star Laim Gallagher's father took a hammer and struck his mother, he blamed God. “I stopped believing in God because of what happened to me,” he said, explaining that he and his mother and two brothers were forced to move into an apartment and start another life.

Yes, blame God. I've never quite been able to understand why God becomes the whipping boy for all human failure instead of the refuge to whom we run when people fail us and situations develop which are hostile to us.

If God mechanically dictated the conduct of people who were no more than robots without a will of their own, then the owner-operator of the universe might be held accountable. But to blame God for human failure is logic badly flawed.

May I Say

Perfectly Attuned
The music of Christmas is filling the air, and multiplied church programs honor Christ’s birth. I witnessed a most touching presentation involving a deaf choir “singing” with others. “Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices, O night divine, O night when Christ was born….” They could not hear one thing, let alone angel voices, but their faces were radiant and joyous and they had heard the Savior’s voice with that inner ear of the understanding. Later on, of course, their ears will be perfectly attuned to the wondrous sounds of heaven.... READ MORE >

Know That You Know

"Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'" --Matthew 7:22–23 (NKJV)

This is one of the most sobering Scriptures that you will ever read. Jesus is addressing the fact that in the end, there will be multitudes of men and women expecting Him to welcome them into the kingdom, only to discover they are aren't going to get in. The reason is clearly communicated as Christ declares, "I never knew you." Imagine their horrific shock. These are religious people; they talked a lot about God and even did some impressive things under the guise of His name, but they didn't personally know Him, and only those who know Jesus will be joining Him in His heavenly kingdom.

Knowing Jesus is one of the necessary qualifications for being part of His Church. As much as it breaks my heart to say this, there are many people today who are in the church who aren't of it because they don't personally know Jesus. No amount of religious routine or sacrificial service can make someone a member of Christ's body. In fact, a person can even pastor a church that he isn't truly a part of because he doesn't know Christ.

So how can we know that we know Him? For one thing, knowing God means that from time to time you cry with Him. In times of crisis, we turn to those that we know best, and those who turn to Jesus in times of hardship and heartache truly know Him. Another indication is that you sing to Him. Praise is so precious because it connects us to Christ on a level that's uniquely intimate. Finally, knowing God means that we talk to Him on a regular basis. Something is off when a profession for Christ isn't followed by a prayer life. Each of these indicates whether someone is merely in church . . . or truly of it.

DIG - What is the main objective in the Christian life? (Hint: read Philippians 3:10.)

DISCOVER - How well do you know Jesus? Back up your answer with examples.

Whatever happened to Christmas?!

Can we put some sanity back into traditions we grew up with and stop all this paranoia?!

City May Ban Red and Green Christmas Lights

Proposed policy allows only white lights and 'secular' symbols.

The city's Holiday Display Task Force soon will make recommendations to the City Council on a policy that allows only white lights and "secular" symbols such as icicles, snowflakes and unadorned greenery.

Mayor Doug Hutchinson said he liked the group's suggestion for a display that would include a "balance of religious and secular items.”

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for the Liberty Legal Institute, isn't buying it.

“To engage in this war on Christmas is ridiculous," he told Family News in Focus, "and I think it goes against what 90 percent of Americans believe in.”

Jordan Lorence of the Alliance Defense Fund said Americans are fed up.

"We cannot allow what we do as a society to be determined or dictated by a few atheists with eggshell sensibilities," he said.

A growing black hole, called a quasar

A growing black hole, called a quasar, can be seen at the center of a faraway galaxy in this artist's concept. Using NASA's Spitzer and Chandra Space Telescopes, astronomers discovered swarms of similar quasars hiding in dusty galaxies in the distant universe.
The new-found quasars belong to a long-lost population that had been theorized to be buried inside dusty, distant galaxies, but were never actually seen. While some quasars are easy to detect because they are oriented in such a way that their X-rays point toward Earth, others are oriented with their surrounding doughnut-clouds blocking the X-rays from our point of view. In addition, dust and gas in the galaxy itself can block the X-rays.

Walk in the Word

God is faithful even when some things are beyond our comprehension.

Choose God’s Love

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
1 John 4:16

One of the definitive messages of the Bible is that “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16). I’ve been a pastor long enough to know that when I say that, some people pull back and look at me sideways, “Really? God is love? Well, if that’s true, then how could He have allowed . . .” - and out comes a painful story.

True Love!

There is no greater love than this, that one should lay down their life for another!

Doing Well

In the book Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley recounts the World War II battle of Iwo Jima and its famous flag-raising on Mount Suribachi. Bradley’s father, John, was one of the flag-raisers. But more important, he was a Navy corpsman—a medic.

In the heat of battle, facing a barrage of bullets from both sides, Bradley exposed himself to danger so he could care for the wounded and dying. This self-sacrifice showed his willingness and determination to care for others, even though it meant placing himself at great personal risk.

Let the road be rough and dreary,
And its end far out of sight;
Foot it bravely, strong or weary;
Trust in God and do the right.  —Macleod
